Skincare is more of a lifestyle than a simple regime. Undoubtedly, skincare plays an important role in making you feel good, confident, and physical self-care.

The most important part about skincare is knowing your skin type. Using amazing but wrong-for-your-skin-type products can turn the skincare heaven into a nightmare. So first, let’s get to know your skin type:

The Five Skin Types

The skin types are generally divided into five basic types based on sebum production and sensitivity:

1. Normal or Balanced Skin

If your skin is neither oily, nor dry, nor you have any sensitive spots then you fall under the normal/balanced skin type.

Normal/balanced skin has:

  • fine pores
  • good blood circulation
  • a soft and smooth texture
  • no or very few blemishes

2. Dry Skin

If your skin is flakey with very tight pores then you fall under the dry skin umbrella. People with dry skin have invisible cracks in their skin. This allows moisture to escape really quickly and irritants to get in more easily.

Dry skin is further categorized into light, mild, and extremely dry skin.

  • Light dry skin feels tight, rough, and looks dull with very little skin elasticity
  • Mild dry skin feels very tight, flakey, rough, blotchy, sometimes itchy, and can be prone to skin sensitivity
  • Extreme dry skin is usually found on hands, heels, elbows, and knees. It feels very rough, scaly, itchy, and has lots of cracks.

3. Oily skin

When there is a high level of sebum production on your skin then your skin is classified as oily skin. Oily skin is prone to acne, blackheads, whiteheads, and several other skin issues. The over-production of sebum upsets the natural pH balance of the skin.

Oily Skin is the one which:

  • Has enlarged and clearly visible pores
  • a glossy shine especially around the T-zone
  • might have thicker blood vessels that may or may not be visible
  • Prone to acne and skin sensitivity

4. Combination Skin

In the combination skin, the skin types vary in the cheek area and the T-zone. Most commonly, the area around the T-zone is oily while the cheek area can be either balanced or dry.

Combination skin can be characterized as:

  • Oily forehead, nose, and chin
  • Cheeks are balanced or dry
  • The t-zone usually deals with the skin impurities

5. Sensitive Skin

It is a skin type is that the most prone to allergies and inflammation. People with sensitive skin have a fluctuating skin type. It can become oily in summers and very dry in the winters.

Sensitive skin is:

  • Very prone to breakouts
  • Reactive
  • Easily sunburned
  • Prone towards rashes and dryness

Now that you are aware of your skin type, the rest of the article is focused on how you are supposed to take care of your skin and which products and ingredients might be suitable for you.

Skin Care For Normal or Balanced Skin Type

You basically have hit the jackpot if your skin is normal or balanced type. This means that there are hardly any problem areas in your skin. But that doesn’t mean that you don’t need to take care of it. Even normal skin needs a good skincare routine to prevent skin variations.

The skincare routine helps to keep the skin pH balance and moisture intact. So, here’s what you need to do:

1.  Cleansing

For normal skin, you can prefer anything you like to help aid any current issues you might be dealing with. Gel, cream, or oil cleansers work fine with normal skin type. My favorite for cleansing is Cetaphil Daily Facial Cleanser for Normal skin.

2.  Toning

An effective cleansing can never be complete without toning. A good toner provides hydration, moisture, and nutrients that keep the skin healthy.

Hydrating toners like Heritage Rose Water Toner work well with normal skin as they provide a dewy finish and keeps the skin clean and fresh.

3.  Moisturizer with SPF (AM)

Most people just forget to use SPF on their skin. I cannot emphasize enough how important it is for your skin in and out. You need to apply a good moisturizer with SPF even if you are inside most of the time.

4.  Serums:

Antioxidant serums with vitamin C and hyaluronic serums are great for the normal skin type. These serums help reduce signs of aging, improves complexion, and plump the skin.

Moisturizing your skin at night is equally important. You can apply nourishing and rebuilding moisturizers to help your skin rebuild its natural barriers at night.

Although your skin might seem perfect, in reality, no skin is “normal” or “perfect”. Even after taking care of your skin, you might still encounter a couple of skin issues like breakouts and stress acne.

Skin Care For Dry Skin Type

The core issue with dry skin is locking in the moisture and providing the skin with enough hydration.

1.  Cleansing (AM and PM):

For dry skin, a no-lather, no-foam, and mild cleansing lotion is the best option. It will not strip your skin from its natural moisture and provide extra nourishment to the skin. Try CeraVe Hydrating Facial Cleanser as it will moisturize and hydrate your skin while cleaning all the impurities. 

2.  Toning (AM/PM):

3.  Serums (AM/PM):

4.  Moisturizer with SPF

8.  Exfoliation:

Never use exfoliators with sharp edges. Your skin already has invisible cracks and heaps of dead skin cells. What you need is a chemical exfoliant that removes the dead skin cells without tearing your skin.

Skin Care For Oily Skin Type

Skincare for oily skin is about controlling excess oil production. As your skin already has larger oil glands that produce excess sebum. Oil breeds bacteria hence inviting all the skin problems like acne and blackheads.

Therefore, the goal is to keep your skin lightly hydrated and still controlling the oil activity. Here’s what you need to do:

1.  Cleansing (AM/PM):

The best cleansing agents for oily skin are gel or foam cleansers that are free of sulfates and parabens. 2.  Toning

You need to find a toner that cuts the oil but doesn’t over-dries your skin. However, don’t use a toner with an alcohol base as it can rip your skin with its natural oils and irritate the skin barrier.

3.  Serums (AM/PM):

The goal for combination skincare is to find a mid-way path that can help in treating the dry and oily concerns of the skin.

1.  Cleansing

2.  Toning

Skin Care for Sensitive Skin Type

A sensitive skincare routine calls for products that can reduce inflammation and are non-irritant. Taking care of sensitive skin can be difficult as you never know what might react and make the inflammation worst.

1.  Cleansing

A gentle cleansing foam or gel is best for sensitive skin. Avoid using cleansers that contain artificial fragrances, parabens, and sulfate as they might leave your skin more irritated and dehydrated. Sunscreen is equally important for all skin types and sensitive skin is not an exception. Like oily and combination skin, sensitive skin is also prone to breakouts and inflammation. 6.  Sheet Masks – Gel-based

7.   Exfoliating

Although people with sensitive skin usually avoid exfoliating, While I agree that physical exfoliating can disturb the skin. However, there are always chemical exfoliants that can the job in a much better way. Try lactic acid to gently exfoliate your skin. But be sure to wear sunscreen during the day as exfoliants make the skin over-sensitive.

Test your skin type

If you aren’t really sure about your skin type then try testing it at home following these simple steps.

  1. Wash your face and pat it dry. Wait at least 30 minutes.
  2. Gently press tissue paper or an oil blotting paper on different areas of your face like forehead, nose, cheeks, and chin
  3. Then hold the tissue or blotting paper to the light to see how transparent the paper is.

Along with the above skin types, you can also have sensitive skin, which doesn’t follow the sebum criteria. Sensitive skin depends on:

  • how fast your skin reacts to product application
  • how well your skin protects itself
  • how easily your skin turns red
  • likelihood of skin allergy

As spring/summertime is almost here. You need to place good skincare to monitor and take care of your skin during harsh weather.

But, remember that nobody has “perfect” skin. Even with a good skincare regime, your might experience few skin issues, Know that it is ok and do not overcompensate by using a million products at the same time.

Be conscious about your health and hygiene inside and out. Staying hydrated, eating healthy, and exercising can help in achieving glowing and healthy skin. While keeping your make brushes, face towels, and face massagers clean is equally important.

Lastly, give it time. Skin miracles don’t happen overnight. The regime needs at least 15-20 days to start showing some results.
